Re: 50 force running slow

When the motor went slower would it rev high just go slow or it sound like the motor had no power when it was going slow. If it would rev high and go slow I would guess your prop is shot. A spun hub is not something you would be able to see or test at home. A 50 hp had a pretty strong hole shot and they had a tendency to destroy props. Better to ease into full throttle instead of gunning it. If there is no oil leaking around that nick I would not worry about it, unless when you turn the prop by hand when the motor is in neutral and it does not spin freely without noise in both directions.

Re: 50 force running slow

The piece you removed is the exhaust snout. If yiou don't replace it, exhaust will foul and vent the prop. Some engines used a zinc compound exhaust snout as a corrosion inhibitor. These will normally pit and corrode with use and are considered a regular maintenance replacement item.

Your prop shaft gland has part of it broken, but the part that is broken is usually considered the "weed cutter." No harm will come from running it this way. The two missing screws are not missing. Those two holes are for a puller to easily remove the prop shaft gland.

The only way to tell if the prop is spun is to run it. Mark the back with a couple of lines from prop shaft out, with magic marker. If the line has shifted after running, then the prop is spun.

when the motor went slower it reved up higher..when i turn the prop by hand in neutral it only turns about an inch in both directions and itll stop. itll move slowly when im not guning it. if i gun it, it gets loud.. sounds like im reving it in neutral

Re: 50 force running slow

Do as Franks says and mark a line on the prop to the prop nut with a sharpie. When motor revs check the line and see if it still lines up if not prop is spun. It can be fixed by a prop shop or you will have to buy a new prop. You can google spun prop if you are not sure what this means.

Re: 50 force running slow

Nothing internally in the lower unit will squeek. Most likely it is a dry seal.
