I could really use some quick advice. I have a 98 Evinrude 50 horse 3 cylinder 2 stroke. It has always run perfectly until I tried starting it yesterday after being winterized. The only way it will run is if I continually push the key in to prime the engine. I messed with it until dark last night and nothing worked. I worried about this all night and didn't sleep well, so, I got up early and looked around some more. I drained the carburetor bowls and it sure looked like the mixture in the bowls was alot more oil than gas. I was thinking the carbs weren't getting any gas since I have to prime it to make it run. I also pulled the top carb and disassembled it, I couldn't find any problems and was actually surprised at how clean it was inside. When I winterized it I put stabil in the fuel and then ran the engine with the gas line unhooked until it was out of fuel. It started to rain hard so I had to give up for now. I am going to get new plugs today and some fresh gas and try it again when the rain stops. This engine always started easily for the first time when I took it out of winter storage. Now the one time I waited until the day before I plan to use the boat I have a problem. I'm on vacation for a week with relatives here who want to get on the lake and this had to happen. I could really use some advice or pointers, the dealer said it would be weeks before they could even look at it.

Check tank vent to be sure its open. Check all fuel lines, especially primer bulb. All should be soft and pliable and no cracks. Rebuild fuel pump.

When I hooked up the fuel line last night I couldn't get the fuel bulb to firm up. I unhooked the line and tried some more and then it was fine. When I drained the fuel bowls there seemed to be alot of oil in there and very little fuel. I'm wondering if oil was being pumped in and not fuel initially so the mixture in the bowls was mostly oil. Could that happen?

After winterizing it is a good practice to install new plugs because one or more may be fouled out by the fogging oil. Also, escessive fogging oil will make it run crummy until its all passed.

Make sure the gas is fresh too.

And yes, if you weren't getting fuel, and it is a vro unit, then it will pump lots of oil and little fuel making it run crummy too.

I just tried it again now that the rain stopped. It started right up and ran perfect. It had to be all the extra oil in the fuel bowls that I cleaned out. Man, what a relief.
