I have a 1987 50 HP Force that runs great when throttled up, but when idling it tends to spit through the exhaust. Sometimes it will stop altogether, sometimes it just spits. Fuel is clean, Fuel filter is clean. 50 to 1 oil ratio.
This problem did not start until after I disconnected the gas line one day at the end of a successful boating trip, and allowed the engine to burn all the gas out of the carburetor. I wanted to avoid leaving gas in the carb. I have checked the coils and they are fine. The plugs were not exactly the right ones for this model, and I have ordered correct plugs. Later, I found the gas line was deteriorating on the inside and I saw some particles from it in the fuel filter. I have replaced the gas line and cleaned the fuel filter, but the idling problem has persisted. Any ideas?

I think you might be refering to a lean pop. Everyonce in a while you get a pop through the exhaust.

Richen the fuel mixture on the low side.

TMD
