50 hp Chrysler outboard

I can only get my 50 hp Chrysler outboard motor to start while choked, when I release the choke it dies.<br />I’ve replaced both coils, both condenser, and both set of points, timing 28 degrees before top dead center, 150 pounds compression each cylinder with throttle wide open and 140 pounds compression at idle, fuel pump is pumping good and have completely cleaned the carb, etc. Can’t figure out why it won’t run, anyone have any suggestions?

Sure sounds like a fuel problem. Did you rebuild the carbs or just clean them? Float levels correct? Somewhere in the carbs there is a restriction not allowing fuel to pass through to the cylinders once you let off the choke. Could be stuck float pins or clogged jets. Get a rebuild kit and this time blow through the jets and passages with compressed air. Make sure the float level is correct and that the needle moves freely and does not bind up. To prove this, Try having someone spray some pre-mix from a spray bottle into the carb throats when you let off the choke and see if it attempts to keep running. If so, it's the carbs.

Might want to rebuild the fuel pump as well. The diaphram is easy to replace. Cost is under 15 bucks

This could be your switch. I would bypass the switch with a hotwire on the engine and see if this gets it running. DO NOT leave the wire on while your not starting or running the engine.<br />You can have someone check the fire at the plug wire as well to see if this is the problem.
