I have a fifty hp lower unit, from the late 80s. The anode is located in front of the exhaust snout. The anode is rectangular, with two screws. It places inside the exhaust chamber, but is not the exhaust snout as many of the pictures show. The exhaust snout can not be removed. Any ideas where I can get this anode, or is my lower unit different than I think t is, and if so any idea what hp or year my unit is.

You have a 1978 Chrysler gearcase. It could be an earlier gearcase that somebody added the anode to. The part number of the anode is FA513485. The snout/anode started in 1979.

The picture above does not match, exactly. The possible anode I am speaking of, is more of a hatch. It is a rectangle, about the size of a nine volt. 1/8 inch thick, with two screws. There is no sign of corrosion, or any form of anode on the lower unit. Also there was a gasket on the piece. I am not sure why you would need to access the exhaust chamber, immediately behind the snout. My main goal is to identify what year and horse power this lower unit is. Besides this strange opening, all other signs point to a late eighties 50 hp. Gear ration, and capacity are the same.
Any ideas are helpful, diagrams are also greatly appreciated.

You can look up diagrams for all years here:

Re: 50 hp force lower unit Anode

I found that web site last night, and came to this conclusion. My lower unit is a 1974 45 hp. Luckily all the major parts are the same for my 1993 40 hp force. The good news is the lower unit fits and works.
The 1974 unit had the flat plate, and a gasket, 1975 -1977, had just the plate, and 1978 added the anode piece, followed by the snout in later years as Willy said. The plate was replaced in all early models with the anode, unfortunately the anode is no longer available. Hopefully since I only use the boat on fresh water lakes, and it is never left in water for long periods of time, the lack of an anode won't affect anything. My next goal is to track down the correct lower unit for my engine, that is air tight. If I can get the correct casing, I change over all the parts.
Thanks for your help Willy
