Hello,
I finally got my 50 running after I hooked it up to my car. I guess I need a new battery. The engine was apparently in gear when I started it and I tried to put it into neutral, but I think I have the controls hooked up wrong. I tried to turn the engin off at the ignition, but nothing happened. I was afraid of the engine overheating, so I cut off the gas. the starter was sparking as it looks as if it was touching the flywheel a little. Any ides on how to get this thing to stop? Thanks!

Unhook the negative terminal to the battery & then pull the spark plug wires.
Also, I think you may have an issue with your starter. Those can be torn
down and rebuilt. I know it requires grease on the 'shaft' of the starter and
a lot guys on here have rebuilt theirs via the "Bendix & brushes". Again,
it's another topic that the "search" feature should find a complete thread
on the process.

Check and make sure your ignition switch is tight in it's bracket. It's probably
plastic and those nuts are pretty weak. I first got mine and thought it
wasn't starting until I realized I was turning the entire ignition switch
assembly.

2nd, check your manual and verify the way you've got it wired. There's
obviously something amiss in the way you've wired the ignition switch if
it will start but not stop. Again, I would look at the switch itself, because
it would seem odd for it to be a wiring problem at the motor if it started.

Those switches are pretty cheap. Just make sure and get the correct one.
On my 50, I need a "push in choke" ignition switch.
