Hi all,

The motor has been running decent for a couple weeks now until i took it out from suisun city to the mothball fleet, about a 20 min ride for me. It ran great on the way there, however 5 mins into the ride back, it starts going slower... then slower... then even slower to about 5 miles an hour! It back fires now and while backfiring, ill hear it push out air... what happened?

I put some earmuffs on the other day to see if it'll start and it starts right up, i also put it in gear and it runs. It does still back fire though?

what can i do? any suggestion is greatly appriciated! thanks :confused::eek:

Sounds like possibly a lean missfire. Make sure the vent on the tank is open first, if ok check fuel filter if you have one ,check fuel line for cracks ,fuel bulb, fuel pump for bad diaphragm, and check valves. Keep us posted on what you find

i think i found a crack in a tube, but i havent actually looked into it for a good inspection because ive been busy with the kid. i got to talk to another boated out there a few nights ago, and he said if its backfiring, its because the motor got wet and its an electrical problem. im going o try and repair the crack tomarrow though.

Has the motor got wet? From what you said ,it's been doing this the last couple ,three trips,if it had got wet ,I would think it would have dried out between trips. And yes ,it could be an electrical problem, look at your wires ,check your plugs and generally give it a good "look over" to see if any thing is obvious [wire arcing, rubbed bare, cut],but to me it sounds like it might be going lean on the fuel side. Keep us posted what you find.MOPARMAN ............ROLL TIDE

Yea, it got a little wet maybe about 2 or so months ago.. and no, it didnt happen the last few trips except the one b4 that where right when we came back to load it up, it shut off right at the launch... we took it out again and it ran great.. im changing out what i think is a cracked tube and new spark plugs on wednsday. i didnt see any broken wires...

Under your reply there is a box that is titled "additional options", then another sub box that is titled "attach files". Click on Manage Attachments, choose your files from your pc and attach them. make sure to reduce the size of your pics before you attach them, the max size for the pics depending on the file type are listed in the pop up window. Use MS picture manager or equal to reduce the size of the pic if too big.

good luck

Re: 50 hp force

Hi! So, I finally tried what mopar told me to try.. and I switched the cracked tube and put some new spark plugs in. It started up up and sounded great! However, after letting it run for about 5 minutes, I shut it off and tried to turn it back on and it wouldn't start. I kept trying, and it started about 10 times later after pulling it into neutral and revving it up it started. I decided to take it to Grizzley island to try it out.. But it was struggling to turn on again. Once we got it to turn on, we put it in gear, and off we went...5 mph.. Whats going on?? It almost sounds like its not going into gear, when we try and go faster.. it barely goes any faster and the motor sounds like its in neutral.. when we cruse at 5 mph the idle is going up and down.. any suggestions to try n fix next?

Well you've not been very clear in some of your descriptions... when the boat "slowed" how was the engine speed? If the engine was still turning high rpms then you've spun the prop...

From your last post where you indicated the rpms were up but the engine didn't seem like it was in gear.... spun hub on the prop.

people at a shop suggested the impeller?... was it a lawn mower shop?

This forum can pretty much help anyone... so long as they have basic mechanical skills/apptitute.

I recommend you take it to a REPUTABLE marine engine repair shop. I don't think you should be trying to work on this on your own..... just saying.
