50 HP Johnson Want Run At Full Power

Motor will runs good, up to full RPM when in neutral, but when I put it in gear it has minimumal power. Acts like I put the choke on or something. Any suggestions? J50TLCUD

check your compression and spark with a spark tester. this gives us a base to work on. do not rev over 1500 rpms in neutral, or on muffs.

Additional info, I had taken motor for starting problems and they changed out the primer solenoid to fix. He also said I needed seals in carbs replaced sooner or later so I had him do it too. He also replaced tank fuel hose connector at motor. After getting the boat home and one the lake I noticed this low power problem. It would run fine some time but most time not. Would that still indicate compression problem or more in line with fuel problem? I took it back to guy he said a linkage had come undone and checked motor on water and said it was fixed. But once again I got on lake and same problem, even worse. Now he tells me the problem was probably a defective fuel pump and it would be $300. to fix???

i have the same motor, only the 48 spl , you can change for the auto mix fuel pump to a premix for around $50.00, but you have to premix your fuel. as i said before to give us a base to trouble shoot from. it could be a very simple adjustment, or a rebuild. but we have to take steps, rather than throw expensive parts at it.

Afguy, I just went throught this same thing this summer, i threw $200 at the engine only to find it was a dirty main jet.
So start with the free basic stuff first,compression, fuel and spark.
Actually how I found mine was I have a small dental syringe and I squirted some gas in the top cylinder,engine almost died,squirted the bottom cylinder and it almost jumped out of the test tank and this was after I had "cleaned" the carbs twice.
And I would maybe look for a different mechanic, this guy sounds like he throws parts at till it goes away rather than finding the problem and fixxing it,just a thought.

Thanks Guys, I'm an ex jet engine mechanic who is completly lost when it comes to outboard motors. I appreciate your kind response to my request for advice.
