I have an older 50 merc 4 cyl. engine that has been driving me nuts. The thing had the control box go bad so I replace that, It idles well and feels like it will go when you open the throttle. The engine will only wind up to about 1500 rpm and will hold there. It feels like it is only making about 15 hp. Can I test the stator or other components withou specialized tools.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Shane Horton
sdhorton@aptalaska.net

Re: 50 hp merc power problems

spin freak has a simular problem this is what i said to him,

i had the same problem with my 1983 murc it would get to around 3.500 4000 rpm and it would run lumpy this happend in the space of 2hrs on the beach, i did everything and it turn out to be my fuel pump, when i would gave her rpm more fuel would flow though the engine and fuel pump, the fuel pump was worn out and old and could not pump the amount of fuel i was trying to give it. i took it apart (carefully) and pushed the pumps gasget valves back into position she now runs like new again
