I posted the other day on a 1979 50 hp. Merc. that takes 5 to 7 seconds to get water to the **** tube, consenious of comments said "replace the water pump.
OK, I looked up the serial # for parts, and found that the motor is not the same year as the boat, and not a 50hp. although the decal says "50HP.".
Now with that said, the serial # is 0A996708 and is listed as a 45HP. ELPTO, mfg. in 85 or 86...

I pulled out my Seloc book and read the section on "lower unit" I followed directions, removing the prop., putting the unit in forward, removing the trim tab and rear bolt and loosened the two side bolts.
Now the problem, the lower unit will only drop less than a 1/4 of an inch and thats all. I tried a little prying with four large headed screwdrivers and the two side nuts and she will not drop or move any farther.I re-read the book and cannot find any other proceedure???

Any ideas what is holding the lower unit from dropping out???

Thank to all of you for taking the time to respond...

Your previous thread said the water was hot, and a good stream. Is it now still hot and a good stream and just taking long to get there?

Re: 50 hp merc. slow on water to **** tube

Ran a temp. check on the water and it tested at 115 deg. at 1200rpm and 122 deg. at idle. not what I would consider hot but hotter than any of my older Merc. 50 and 85hp. engines ever were.
Consern now is that the engine runs for seven sec. before it get water to the pee hole.
Decided to replace the water pump assmbly and attempted to remove the lower unit.
Not the first lower unit as I have removed two before in years past.

Problem is the lower unit will not come off.
Wondering if I missed something??? as I re-read the directions in my Seloc merc. book on removal of lower units.????

Re: 50 hp merc. slow on water to **** tube

Your older Merc probably didn't have a thermostat. Current engines, like since about '84-'86 when the mid range engines went from 4 to 3 cylinders (new design, new technology, thermostats and over temp sensors type of things) have a thermostat and all the pellets I have seen from 90 thru 150 hp have 143F stamped on the pellet which is the opening temp.

7 seconds for your engine to get water to your pee stream is not bad and if you weren't plumbed directly off your exhaust manifold, as my 90 hp is, and plumbed off the output of the tstats as my son's 150 is then you would have to wait till the stat opened to get any kind of reasonable flow.

Apparently you got all the screws loose if you were able to drop your LU at all. Only 3 things interconnecting: Drive shaft, shift shaft, water tube....nothing else. Just take your time and move your LU up and down while watching the 3 areas with a flashlight/mirror and once you find the problem then attack it.

Your problem is probably your shift shaft sticking.

Thanks on the probibability that it may be the shift shaft, anyone have any ideas on how to get it loose???

If I need to cut the shift shaft or water tube, are new or used ones available
