I am a novice, inherited a McGregor sailboat with a 50 hp mercury (1998) outboard. The motor was recently serviced, runs swell but after about 5-7 minutes idling, the warning horn alarm on boat steering pulpit sounds and will not stop. I replaced the thermostat to no avail, the oil is full, the motor is pumping water. When I tilt the motor up and connect water hose to input, it never overheats and alarm does not sound. How do I know if motor is really overheating ? I am afraid to disconnect warning horn for fear of damage and no mechanic will service with boat in water (ocean). Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.
