Hey guys,
I've got a 50 hp force 2 stroke that runs great and starts up great when warm but when its cold it has a hell of a time starting. The first time I attempt to crank it it will fire in a half turn but only run for a split second, after that I have to crank it for a good 10 to 15 straight seconds before it will go. I'm assuming that initial fire is from the left over gas in the carb. So it seems that the problem would be getting enough gas in the carb to get her started. Like i said though it always starts just have to crank it for a while which im afraid it might be taking its toll on the electrics and starter. Anyone have any suggestions. It seems that the fuel pump would be fine because the engine runs fine once its going. thanks in advance.

You did not state if you try to prime the bulb or not when you first do the cold start. If you do, then your likely needing just a carb clean. Which you should do anyway for preventive maint.... Next if you are still having the issue, make sure your fuel pump filter is clean...You know...just the normal stuff like that. Not only will you likely find your problem, your bound to get familar with your engine, and at the same time do some needed maintin. so you wont be left out on the lake!

Nothing sucks worse than being dead in the water and paying for a tow when all thats stopping you from having a great day is a $5 part.

I do indeed prime the bulb before. You're right, I'll just go ahead and do those couple of things and see if that helps. Thanks for the advice.

Some motors need to have the ball squeezed everytime and need to have the choke used.J

I have a manual choke that I use and it seems I use that bulb as a hand workout...

Mine when pressed severall times will get hard as a rock... But I only do it when I have added fuel or used all of it while out on the lake. Otherwise I do not even need choke.

You stated that you had a manual choke ,is it closing all the way?Any chance the carb bowl is leaking the fuel out between cranks, that would explain the long cranking time [refilling the bowl]If the choke is closing all the way [checking it visually] then I would check the fuel bowl to see if it's empty, [this is what it sounds like]. My two cents worth

you know, now that I think about it I don't think its closing at all. I will hold it down closed when I get home and see if that helps. thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how it goes.
