50hp,73model evinrude outboard

some times it starts and runs fine.other days it has no spark,even after disconnecting the kill switch wire
from the power pack. two times it got me stuck down river. It never stops while its running,just won;t restart.,
sorry but I am new at this; it is a 50hp evinrude ;73 model.
