I have a 74 50hp sizzler, just acquired been sitting for a number of years,OH carbs, new plugs, hoses, lines but still does't want to run at low speed or idle most of the time.

What should the compression and float levels be?The compression checks at 85psi even.

Also every now and then when cracking the throttle open builds RPMs slowly, have changed props.

At 85 per cylinder it aint sizzlin as much. You can attempt to tune it out ,however I don't think it's going to run like new.May have to live with a little rough idle .Compression should be 100+.

Ok I rechecked the compression on the 50 doing it the way I learned on the forum.Didnt have the throttle open before, and the compression now reads at 125 and 130 per cyl.Still the motor at times just wont idle.
Any suggestions?
Is this just and OMC thing have two others, another 1989 50hp and a 74 115hp johnson and they both take spells where they just wont idle.
Thanks, I am new to the forum and already have learned a lot.

Drake, don't know specifics on float level adj. Most idle and fuel delivery problems are a direct result of motors sitting idle for extended periods and carb ports and orifices becoming restricted rather than any inherent fragility. On a motor of that vintage i would recommend servicing entire fuel system beginning with carb dismanteling and cleaning. Also , fuel lines ,disconnects, prime bulbs, and fuel pump as all of these components when not used regularly are prone to failure and would result in similar performance issues. It is quite simply a process of elimination .Check the most accessible and obvious to start with.
