model 507x7b.. when removing lower unit found a black boot/seal just laying on top of lower unit.. seems to be part 42 (seal) that sits on part 43 ( retainer) this is on the splines of the drive shaft.. looking in clymer manual 50hp lowerunit exploded view,, my question is can i put a new seal on top of retainer and install lower unit?..

If the old seal is not hardened, melted, or cracked, you can re-use it. Otherwise spend your money and buy a new one.

If it is like the bellows on the larger engines, the tapered portion of the seal goes up--against the crankshaft.

Use some anti-seize sparingly on the splines before you install the lower unit.

Hello Frank, the old one is torn in half and have a person at go2marine.com looking for a replacement .. thanks for the info... the collar is still attached to the drive shaft rather snuggly ,, so i dont see a need to move it off the shaft.
