50hp Force- dieing when put into gear

I have a 50hp Force outboard. It ran fine all day and was coming back from a fishing trip and was about 3/4 throttle and it just quit on me. It started again after waiting a bit then put it into gear and it quits running. Tried it couple of times and the same thing. The motor has never acted up in two years. Need help fishing derby on this week.

Did it overheat?
Test the heat/overheat system.
Key on,ground out the Orange lead at the terminal block.

Then do a compressionspark test.
Check for water in the tank?
