When I start the engine the auto choke works and it eventualy drops down to a steady idle. When I put it in gear and I rev it up it does fine. When I put it back into neutral the idle stays very high amd sometimes even goes higher yet all the indications mechanically show that it should be in a low idle. I am baffled.

Can you select NO auto choke after its in gear?

ram , if this motor is a 89 or older and you are getting this while running on the hose , not in the water, these will sit and cackle at you for 10 seconds or so when the throttle is brought back to neutral.i think it is because it needs back pressure on the exhaust. if you just tap the choke does it quit cackling???

Re: 50HP Force idle problems

My Force 1996 40hp doing same exact thing (now).
My probs. began about three weeks ago. First, I
hadn't run the thing in about 3 to 4 months then
when I was at the launch the starter went out.
Replaced that, started fine but noticed the high
idle only at neutral. Went out anyway and during
the trip the carb. began leaking gas everywhere.
Float was stuck so the next day took carb. apart
and cleaned. Found black small pieces of rubber
shavings all inside orafices. There was enough of
these to impede the pin from working. Anyway now
no carb. leaks but the high idle in neutral and
seems to speed up as well. I'm thinking fuel pump
but wondering about the electric choke somehow
now. Mine has never worked anyway I don't hear
the click when I push it in. Sorry for the book
here...I'm a first time poster.

clad, your engine has a enrichener valve and not a choke plate like older motors. they are both activated by holding the key in while cranking over.

The idle speed may need readjustment when the motor is warm. You probably have a screw that buts to the engine block on the left side. Changing it won't adversely affect the cold idle speed. Has this engine just come out of storage?

sony, this engine has just recently come out of storage. Don't understand the difference between cold idle and warm? Also, my fuel enrichener is a valve that pumps by hand or by depressing a little button 5 or 6 times.

Re: 50HP Force idle problems

Since it just left storage there is probably some varnish deposits in the carb and jet that changes your idle mixture. A decarbonnifation treatement wouldn't hurt but won't remove the varnish inside the carb, only in the venturi area. Before cleaning carb and jet you could reset idle speed lower as mentioned earlier, when it develops its high speed idle. The screw is on the vertical bar the activates the two carbs at the same time.

Clad, the black stuff IS the fuel pump..Well, at least, the diaphram of it. It's time to buy a rebuild kit for your fuel pump. Alcohol-enriched gas eats them, and the chunks end-up in the carb.
And he is right about these engines "Cackling" in the driveway, when the throttle is run-up,and not in gear. They tend to stay there.
One other thing, stay close by when flushing after a trip.Mine ran-off on it's own from carbon glowing in the cylinders, made it diesel...Scared me to death, beacause the ignition key wouldn't kill it,and throttle position had no effect.
If it ever does this, spray some decarb down it's throat.
