I have a 2000 50hp Johnson on a 14 foot bayliner and I am thinking to take it to Lake Cumberland (kentucky)in the spring.

My question is: It's a big lake and I would like to calculate what kind of range I can expect out of a tank of gas. The tank holds 11 gals topped off.

I couldn't find any specs on the motor as far as gph/rpm's.

Approx 4.5 gallons per hour at full throttle.
Maybe 3 per hour at 3000 rpm.

Best to test it out to be sure, and carry an extra gallon or two to be safe. Or an extra 6 gallon portable tank if you need to extend the range.

OMO

Cool thanks, I just wanted some kind of idea of what to expect. I've never really calculate it while out on the lake. Always too busy fishing..lol

Re: 50hp fuel consumption

I have a 40 hp Evinrude that is not too far removed from the 50 hp Johnson you have (2 cycle, right?). On a 14" runabout that weighs about 1000 lbs without fuel, people or gear, I can get between 2 -3 gallons an hour depending on how heavy I lean on the throttle.

One day I just idled (800-900rpm) my way around a lake looking at all the water front houses with 4 adults. Only burned 1 gallon in 1 1/2 hours.

Your fuel consumption should be about the same as long as you don't run WOT.

Of course, if you run out of gas after using my usage as a guide, I will disavow any knowledge of this post. ;)

LOL...I won't blame you if run out. Yep it's a 2 stroke. I think Ill be just fine, I did a little math and I figure that based on 10 gallons I should get about 80 miles (that's with not much if any reserve)if I cruise about 25 mph. My boat cruises happily at 25 mph. Although I'm taking a friend that isn't exactly a small fella. Together we go aboout 520 lbs. The boat limit says 600 on the coast guard sticker or 880 with motor people and gear. I think the motor weighs in at 200 lbs.

Theres a formula for fuel consumption that works with any size marine engine "1/3 out 2/3 back"

Let's see if I've been taught Anything here at iboats.
10%HP x US Gallon at WOT
A 50 will travel at around 26-28 Knots ph which will take @5 gallons to travel 27 nautical miles.
4.5 gallons per hr is pretty close.
Roscoe... You're a good 'ol boy.. ;)

The old way 150 hp WOT = 15 gph Tied to the post
" " " 90 hp WOT = 9 gph "" " " "
400 hp WOT= 40 gph etc etc etc
2 stroke, 4 stroke, diesel, rotary efi, dfi, carb
Just comes down to you got burn fuel to make power.
