50hp mariner lower unit stud and lock nut

I have just replaced the impeller on my 50 hp Mariner but the threaded stud coming down from the upper unit (the stud in the trim tab well) is worn. Can I remove this thread stud from the upper unit by turning counter clockwise? Can I get a new stud and lock nut?

Also, I wonder if I could use the motor without this stud since there are 3 other nuts holding the unit on plus the trim tab nut.

Thanks for any help.

Re: 50hp mariner lower unit stud and lock nut

The stud is no longer available but a shop close to home rethreaded the old stud and I have now re-assembled the motor. The shop foreman explained that the motor should not be operated without this connection even though there are several other connections holding the lower unit in place.

Also, the old impeller I replaced was a new impeller installed last year. However, there were some minor chips in the blades. I thought it ought to work with these minor chips missing but the shop foreman said no. Any gaps in the impeller, however minor, will cause the impeller to fail.
