50HP Merc. Need some Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just bought my first boat with a 50hp merc on the back and it ran fine for 2 days, then it started running rough so I brought it in for a tune up. Well $350. later he tells me there is water getting into the bottom 2 pistons and I need a new engine. I took the boat out and it was hard to start, had to have the choke on for it to idle,and when I got it into drive there was low power and it seemed bogged down when i tried to open it up.When I tilt the engine out of the water a little I seem to get my top speed again, but it still is hard to stard and idle.Any ideas?

Several folks will probably jump in to help. To get you started read the post "Suggestions for new posters." It will tell you the info you need to provide to get help. Plan on getting a manual. Spend a couple of hours reading posts that seem simular to your problem. Explore the Search function on this site.<br /><br />You will need to start with a compression test. Your problem may relatively simple or you may be better off thinking about replacing the motor. <br /><br />First you need to get some information then you need to provide some info so folks can help. For example you did not tell us if your motor was a 1996 or 1966.
