50hp merc thunderbolt

I have an opportunity to buy a used merc 50hp thunderbolt. What year did merc make the motors using the model name "thunderbolt"??

Frank,<br /><br />We'll need a bit more info, as my Merc 50 (Blueband about 1982) is has a Thunderbolt ignition, but there are earlier and later ones with the same.<br />It is a "Coil pack" CD ignition that uses a stator and trigger and has 1 coil per cylinder. and is a very effective and reliable system.<br />If you know your serial no , we can tell you when and where it was made. Serial no is on the boat side of the transom bracket.
