50hp Merc. what is top RPM?

my neighbor just installed a 50 merc on boat. runs great for about 100 yds then slows down, yr model unknown

Post the serial no and we can look up the year for you. It should be on a plate on the transom mount.

have you tried pumping the primer bulb to see if it picks up speed again ?
depending on the year you should hit 5000-5500 rpm .
