Just aquired boat with this engine - new to outboard motors. Serial number is 4280459. No idea of year can anybody help or point me to where I can find out.?

Engine has been unused for about 2 years. Started well on dry land and gave it its first shake down on sea last week with new petrol/oil. Ran well at top end for a while then seemed to die a couple of times and didnt like going slowly with poor pick-up.Started ok again after about a 5min wait Throttle stiff as well.

Any advice for getting it back in shape. I am fairly capable but as yet no manual - any service guides posted on web? I also notice a vent and flush screw on prop - how does one go about using these and for what purpose?

Thanks for help.
simon

Hi Simon

Blueband 500 (50,0) 4141000 - 4357639 1975 4 cyl.

I have a '77 model. Great motors! Mine had been sitting for 3 years when I bought it Nov 2003. Start with a compression test.
Get a manual (can't work without one) and start with new plugs and a decarb. Check the carbs for fuel leaks and you may need to rebuild these. Replace the water pump impellor.
Make sure that your fuel mix is right at 50:1. Plugs do foul up with too much oil. Keep posting.

Greg

What sort of top speed on a 14ft ski-boat could you expect from it Greg - motor does seem to have lots of potential

Many thanks
simon

Simon My 17 ft. bass boat has a 75 Hp. Mercury and it will do 38-40 mph. I think this might be a ball park number for your set up as well. Maybe someone has a more similar set up and can put you a little closer. I have used Clymer and Seloc manuals and they are a poor substitute for a factory service manual. I recently ordered one from these people and had it in 3 days: http://marineengine.com/manuals/mercury/index.html

Hey Simon

My boat is a 13'6" glass runabout - does 35 -37 mph on my Navman sounder. Haven't had a GPS on board yet. Motor is a real sweetie. I expect that you should get 30-35 mph depending on your hull shape and setup.

Greg
