I have a 1997 50hp johnson. It turns over perfect and I raise the idol lever up. It starts to die out an either shuts offs or idols very low until about 20 seconds later it idols back to normal. Also when I'm in gear and lower the motor all the way down, it'll smokes real good and stall out on me unless I give it gas while I trim the motor down. I don't know if maybe the lines are gunked up? please post thoughts and possible solutions

First thing to do is check the compression on it. Then the spark which should jump a 7/16" open air gap on a tester.

Check no linkages have come off, if there is a timing base with a ball and socket type connector they can separate and thus malfunction

I would check your spark and compression first making sure they are strong on both. After having a look at some of the linkages on and around your carburetors determine if they all look ok.If so; issue sounds like it may be fuel related that fuel is not passing through the low speed idle circuits in the carbs. May be time to remove and clean and install new kits. Very common for older engines and not that terrible of job.

Good Luck!

I took the spark plugs out one at a time while engine was running and they sound good. Engine did not stall. Would that show that the compressions are fine? I'm not very good when it comes to mechanical stuff, is it common to take old two stroke engines to get serviced like this?

I took the spark plug out of each carb while the muffs were on to see if maybe one carb was clogged up. But they both ran fine

????????---please be clear on what you did !---------How do you take a sparkplug out of the carburetor ?------Report the results of a compression test.--If you do not have the tools for that then run to your local shop and have it done as it takes just minutes.
