I have a Lower unit I'm trying to test. Not sure of the year but it is white and does not have the anode filler block above the prop So I give it a year range of 1977 to 1982.

Ran it in the water yesterday, It will not shift into reverse, almost like it is not shifting far enough to engage. While when stifting in to forward it almost seames like it is engaging early. Forward gear is solid and does not jump or jerk like I have seen with a bad clutch dog.

The engine is a 1983 60hp that with the original lower has no issues and shifts just fine so I don't believe it's in the shift cables.

Could it be the shift rod out of adjustment and if so does anyone know the measurement as the manual does not list it.

There is a section in the "Top Secret File" that has listings for the shift rod adjustment, maybe that will help you out.

Re: 50hp Not shifting into reverse

Just looked at that and am a bit confused.
Lists a 75 - 78 electric start 50, 55, 60 @ 20-29/32" and a 78 - 81 50hp - 55hp manual start @ 21- 23/32 . Is the electric start the same measurement?

Does anyone know how far out of adjustment before it will not shift correctly?

Still looking for a clue to this problem.

Now after wrenching my back it may be a few days before I can remove this lower to check it out. Unless I can get my son to pull it off.

What manual are you using?
If you engine is a 1983, I don't see it listed, you will have to wait for someone with a manual for that engine to come along and help out.

Re: 50hp Not shifting into reverse

The engine I'm testing with is a 1983 60hp 2 cylinder J60ELCTB, then there are 2 50hp that I need to test the lowers on. One is a 1975 Johnson 50ESL75Band the other is a 19987 J50TELCUD

The 1975 and the 1987 I have manuals for, the 1983 I do not. The 1987 manual shows a measurment of 20-29/32" + or - 1/32 and also measured the 60hp which is the same length. So I'm assuming the the 50hp is the same length even though the lower unit in it apppears to be from a 1977- 1982..

The son and I removed the lower and mearured the length and it was way off spec, adjusted it and reinstslled it then ran it on muffs, and then shirted fine in all gears, accept he missed the waterpickup tube and it wasn't spraying water from thre telltale so we had to pull it gain. and now there appears there is a problen with the remote as it is now binding and wont shift, even when disconnected fron the engine, but that will be a tonorrow project.

Hopefully I wont be all be all drugged up from the pain meds for my back and will be a little more clear headed, because after this come the test on the lower unit for the 1987. It is supose to maybe have a bad ckutchdog and jumping out of forward gear,

Re: 50hp Not shifting into reverse

The 2 cylinder motors 1976 to 1988 are to be 20-29/32" measured in nuetral.---------Confusion comes in when " commercial " lower units ( hybrid 3 cylinder ) are involved.

Re: 50hp Not shifting into reverse

Thanks racerone. I found that measurement in my 1987 50hp manual and went with it. The 1975 50hp manual shows no reference at all.
Now I need to see what happened to the remote box. Even disconnected it now will not move into the reverse position and the warm up lever will not raise. This happened after removing the lower to reconnect the water tube.

Any ideas as to where to begin to look? Really don't want to take the whole thing apart.

Re: 50hp Not shifting into reverse

broke a tooth on th throttle shift plate and was able to locate e new onehoefully all is well now and the lower was shifting as it should. I think the the kid helping moved the throttle a bit to far to assist with the placement of the shift pin. Will test tomorrow to be sure.
