Could someone please tell me the torque spec for the flywheel nut on a 1953 Johnson Seahorse 25 HP RD14. Thank you.

I'm having a hard time getting this thing started after I rebuilt the carb (didn't start before). Took the flywheel off to verify the points condensor and coils were replaced by previous owner. They look new, but I'm going to check the adjustment. I installed new spark plugs too.

Any suggestions on why else it might not be starting. I adjusted the carb needles two turns olpen like the shop suggested after I rebuilt the carb.

Thanks

The later models are 40-45 lbs torque so that'd be my starting point... Have you verified spark with a spark tester?

My chart says 60-65ft./lbs. on a 25 hp.--- tsk. tsk., Steve:p:p
Until you get spark right on that rascal, it has no hope of starting, so you're wise to get that right. Those dudes require a pretty good tug to start! You definitely don't have to worry about some kid "borrowing" it!:) Got compression #'s??
Just curious,

That's why I said the later ones!

Dang though... I think I only put my '54 25hp to 50 lbs last year... Oh well. Keys are cheap should I need one!

Thanks for the torque numbers.

I was just out and regapped the points to .020 and the plugs to .030, then reset one of the coils that was not set flush w/ the edge. I was told everything as far as condesor, points and coils was replaced and they look fairly new. BUT I have got no spark w/ my spark checker. I set the flywheel back on (not torqued), removed the spark plugs and put my inline spark tester (inbetween plug wire and plug) on, then rotated the flywheel w/ the plugs out, but touching the block for ground.

Am I missing something here? This is my first Points type ignition:eek: to be playing w/. They seem simple enough, but I'm used to Big Diesel Cat or Cummins that I need a computer to do just about anything with:D

Oh, and you're right about not worrying about a boy taking this thing for a ride, LOL. My arm was sore after a day of trying to get this thing started:rolleyes:
Thanks all for the help

Make sure the vacuum cut-out switch isn't grounding the offending cylinder. Temporarilly disconnect it. DON'T leave it disconnected, it prevents runaway. I don't have to tell you about runaway.

Make sure the points are clean and gapped correctly. Then check them with an ohmmeter. When closed, there should be zero ohms resistance. Not one or two ohms, zero!

If you are satisfied with that, check the resistance between the offending spark plug wire and armature plate. Should be several k-ohms. Exact number of k's is not important, just so it isn't infinity or many k's (or shorted).

If you are satisfied with that, time to suspect the spark plug wire is arcing through to ground. Happens often where it is clamped to the armature plate. Just an invisable pin hole where it arcs.

I'll deffinatly try that. I took everything apart and removed the coils so I could check the connection of the wire to the coil, it was a little dirty so I clipped a bit of wire and ran it through a little more. I then had spark on both cylinders, BUT still would not start after I got everything put back together. I'm getting frustrated now.

There was a small spot on the black wires on both coils where it had rubbed through to the wire. It was not broken so I just put some shrink tube on it and put everything back on.

I'm not sure if its not getting enough fuel or enough spark. I'm going to try and ohm things out a little better, but I'm not seeing any obvious reasons why it shouldn't start now.

Any other suggestions?

By the way, thanks for the help you've given, it's moved me alon quite well.

Try turning your low speed adj. knob clockwise until gently seated, then back it out about 1 1/2 turns. Then, turn gently close your high speed knob and back it out about 1 turn. Close the choke on that thing only 2 pulls max, then push the choke in and pull again 2 or 3 pulls. It should crank. You may notice a little fuel leaking out the carb. throat after 2 pulls on choke. That seems to be normal and usually you'll only need to pull it one time on choke and then push it in. That thing sucks a heckuva lot of fuel in when you choke it.
If all else fails, take the plugs out, dry them off, and squirt a little fuel/oil mix in your carb. throat and see if she will bust off. If you can get it running you can adjust the carb. and it will be easier to crank.
Don't let it frustrate you! You'll get the rascal eventually.:p

Sounds good. I gave it a rest today and started marking out and trimming wood for my deck and seats. I've pretty much got all my parts needed to finish the boat, just have to get some gray roll on bed liner for the deck and seat panels and then get everything done and get the motor running. I got a lot to do, LOL

I was sure the torgue was higher than 40-45 Ft.lbs. But my Johnson torgue chart call's for that figure. That still does'nt sound right. I'll go out and check a old RD service manual.

My RD Johnson service manual calls for a torque of 70 ft. lbs. That certainly sound's more like it. The torgue chart call's for 40-45, but then the same chart has the little TN 5HP at the same torque, so you know something is wrong. That chart is an original Johnson print, not a reprint, or after market.
