My recoil starter started messing up by not gripping when I'd pull it. Then when the motor would start you could hear a rattle. Finally the pieces that grip the flywheel ground off. Everything was tight so I don't understand why it did this. When replacing it is the any special things I need to know so this won't happen again??

Most of those recoil starters have little metal pawls with springs on them so when you pull the rope they engage the flywheel, and when it starts the springs pull the pawls back out of engagement. You may be able to fabricate some new pawls using your old ones for a pattern, then make some springs out of any spring material and some needle-nosed pliers. You might find some parts for that old motor, but it's sorta doubtful. Good Luck!;)

Try the salvage yards listed in the Engine FAQs. One of them may have a replacement starter for you.

Good luck. :)
