Hi
You seem to have answered your own question!

You'll need to set the floats and the low speed needles if they haven't been done. There should be enough info in the Clymer manual to do this, but if not, Joe Reeves has posted some excellent pieces on here detailing how to do both.

Use the search facility and you'l find plenty of advice.

Good luck
Steve

Re: 55 horse erude 1976

i leveled the floats and took it to the boat launch and got it running well, now my concern is this if i take it out and test it and get the same power loss i would have to say its my stator as thats the only thing not new,
when i sprayed carb cleaner in the carbs (this was before i was told not to)but when i did the top carb it picked up rpm and when i sprayed the bottom it dropped rpm so it was bogging when i did this,
does this sound like ignition, and will the carb thats bogging not get lubrication if its getting weak spark,or is the fuel going through and lubing that cylander.

I'm not an expert or anything, but it sounds to me like a fuel problem.

Check to see if you're getting a healthy spark at both plugs. If so, your ignition system is probably O.K. In which case, it has to be fuel.

I would start by dumping the fuel in your tank and replacing it with fresh. Then check from your tank, to the carbs to see if you are getting an good uninterupted flow of fuel. Make sure the tank is vented.

Check the filter in the pickup tube in your tank, check the primer bulb, then Check all fuel lines for cracks, splits, etc. Check all connections to make sure they are air tight.

If you are getting fuel to the carbs, then they will need taking off, cleaning and rebuilding again.

How do the plugs look when you take them out? Are they dry, wet, oily, clean? If you have one clean and one dirty plug, you may have water entering a cylinder.

A weak spark won't stop lubrication, but lack of fuel will!

Good luck
Steve

Re: 55 horse erude 1976

Chicken louie, a friend of mine just replaced his stator on a 92 Evinrude 70. The symptoms were as follows. No start. No fire. Just a spinning motor. Dead. He had overheated his engine in shallow water. Hard of hearing and thought the bell ringing was his fish finder. The heat caused the stator to crack. It would start every once in a while. It would run normally, when working. But when it went out for a spell.... it was dead. He lost no performance from it when it was running. But it usually would not fire. When he replaced it, we found the burnt spots on the stator and the cracks. Engine fires fine now. Cranks up like the old days. So, maybe someone can correct me, but I would think that if your stator was bad.... it would be dead. If it cranked intermittently it would probably run fine at the time.... until it malfunctioned again.

So have you run the engine since you replaced all the fuel lines and rebuilt the carbs?

had the boat out and it ran great at wot for two tanks of fuel so i think my problem is solved.
i burned 3/4 of a 6 gallon tank of fuel at wot,do you think thats normal for a two stroke or does that sound like poor mileage.
i have the carbs set at 1 1/2 turns out on the low speed jets.
was sure nice to not have to get towed in.

Gald you got the problem sorted.

Consumption does sound a bit excessive, but I suppose it depends on what boat you are running and how much it is loaded up. My boat is a 17 ft tri hull, weighs about 1000lbs unladen. I usually fish with 2 or 3 people on board, auxillary engine, fishing gear, spare fuel, etc, and my Johnson 55 gives me about an hour, sometimes more, on 25 litres, (about 5 gallons). I don't run at WOT all the time though. There is a sweet spot that gives you a nice cruising speed and good fuel consumption. On my setup, about 5000 rpm is good.

Good luck
Steve
