morning, I just got a 55 hp evenrude outboard that had worked fine up until 3 years ago when he put in his garage and hasn't used since.
What kind of pre-run maintance do I need to do on this motor before I start it up to make sure I don't ruin anything? Brand new to this forum, and could use all the help I can get.
Also, he gave me one of those suction cup things to hook garden hose to to start up motor and check it out before I haul it all the way to the lake. Do those things work ok?

Re: 55 hp evenrude outboard

Welcome mcj - Got yourself a new toy - lots of fun comming. Anyway -

First thing is to get some fresh 87 octane fuel and put together a batch of pre-mix with tcw3 marine oil at 50:1. Use an empty tank (I assume you're runnin 6 gal tanks) & get rid of any old fuel if any. Then charge the battery - I assume electric start.

The suction cup thingies are called muffs & work quite well - don't run motor over about 2,000 rpm. Attach, turn on water & see if it will start. If it does I wouldn't run it to long and do some "new to me" maintenance. This will include new plugs & checking the oil in the gearcase. If OK you should be safe to go for a trial run. You then need to think about replacing the water pump and thermostats. If it runs rough most likely you have some old fuel & will need to rebuild the carbs. All of this is easy to do if you have a shop manual and I recommend the OMC specific to your motor. They should be available & will save you both $ & heartach in the long run.

Good luck & post back if you run into problems.

Not a Boat Topic, MCJ.

This belongs in Evinrude Outboard Troubles. I will move it there.

Good luck. :)
