I have a 1977 chrysler 55 hp with the magnapower 2 ignition. It has a bad CD module and only runs on one cylinder. The problem is availability of REASONABLY PRICED replacement parts. I have been quoted $310 for a repair and return service for this one component. Is there a lower priced alternative? The motor seems to be in pretty good shape, and I would like to get it running, but not at the quoted prices. Could I fit a different ignition system to this motor? Thanks for any help... Tom

The replacement ignition system for this engine was soon discontinued by Mercury after the Force engine was bought.

The only alternatives you have are to find an old 55 with the new style ignition...or send in your cd module for repair.

TMD

I could not return you email..so I will post it here.

The latest..but now discontinued ignition was a change up that you could purchase to replace your existing ignition system. You would use the same ignition that was used on the Force 50hp engines.

Replacement involved a new powerpack 2 coils, the head, stator and trigger. All your old ignition was just tossed into the garbage.

The newer style had a black powerpack and matching black coils with a Dull aluminum color head.

Unfortunately your best option is to send your cd module in. I assume you are refering to RAPAIR? As they are the only place that I know of that do repairs to the modules. Are you sure this is the problem?

The simple test for the cd module is as so.

Spin the engine over, then turn the key off....Next take a screw driver and arc the Cd Module leads to ground..I believe one is white the other is blue. You do this right at the module itself. If it sparks on both..the module is good. If no spark or only one sparks the module is bad.

Let me know how you make out.

TMD
