55 Johnson / what year / other info

I have an opportunity to purchase this motor and the seller thinks it is early to mid 70's. Does anyone know for sure.

Any more information about his particular model would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like an early 70's model. If you can see the serial number badge on the motor it will tell you the year. I had a 77 similar to it and it was a great work horse. Alwaysbeen told the early models like them are the true work horses, worth their weight!

Thanks RFA. I did a little research and the only ones I can find pictures of are all white.

In decent running condition, what would you say the value might be?

Well I just sold my 1977 55hp johnson for 750. Judging by the pic, that one is in much the same condition, but what does it look like under the hood, does it run, has it been serviced, does it include controls? Hard to price it without all the information.

Looks like a 1974, at least the graphics on the hood match.

I say 1976, small gearcase. Just my 2cents.

I think you might be right EN2. I was doing a little research on the parts list on this site and 1976 is the first year they show a 55 hp.

Do you know much about the 76 model?
