Does anyone know a cross reference number for the bearing on the prop shaft. It would be the one towards the back, not towards the prop. I see the gear is available but comes with the bearing. I only need the bearing. Also, can't ever find anything about a 557hc, no hc's anywhere, must be old. Another poster said it was a 71 modle.

Are you talking about the bearing cup attached to the forward gear? The only gear on the prop shaft is the thrust bearing located in the bearing cage. Also the prop is in the rear and the forward gear is in the front of the lower unit.

That bearing cup only comes as a set with the gear. The set cost is about 175 bucks and the merc number is 1600-817826A7. This part is for a 1974 lower unit but it should work with a 1971

Hi jrwhites
Press the bearing from the gear, pull the race from the housing. Take the parts down to the local bearing house and ask them to match them up for you. You will need to make sure set-up and shimming is correct upon reassembly. Just how bad is the bearing your replacing? If it is just lightly stained, maybe a few small pits, you could probably be better off to just run it.

the bearing was in pieces when I pulled the gears. I might beable to match it up though. It will be easy for the outside diameter, but the center part might be tough. I think I might just hold ouot and find another lower unit. I can sell the rest of the stuff on e-bay. My lower unit is in good shape, just lost the bearing.

There is a lower unit going on ebay right now that would probably work for you.
ebay lower unit
Even if the gears are trashed the bearing you are looking for should be okay. Plus you have all the other spare parts to go along with it. I got one on ebay this winter and it is has been running all season on my boat without a hitch.
