Hey everybody this is my first post...very nice site here with lots of information. Don't know a whole lot about boat motors but I like to dig into things and learn about them and how they work.

First off, I think it is a '56....the model number is #7520

Sat in my dads basement for about 5 years till I bought a 12 ft. v bottom last summer. Put it on there, no spark. I replaced the coils and then she ran.

EDIT: Forgot to touch on the points. I know they are suppose to be gapped to .020 and I think I read somewhere that you want the points to be 180 degrees from the crank when you set them. What does that mean? I just dont know where to have the throttle set at when adjusting or anything...has the word "TOP" printed on the crank shaft I think...

At the time of running it last summer, wasn't sure what was happening...it would rev up in neutral but not in forward gear. But sometimes it would. This year it just stays bogged down in forward. I did some searching on here and here's what I did.

Pulled each plug boot off while it was running and when pulling bottom plug wire no change. Pulled top wire off and it died. I have checked the coils for continuity and they are good to go....I guess heres my question. On the cylinder that is running good, I did a resistance test from coil to spark boot and got 1600 ohms. On the the other cylinder I got 3000 ohms. Should they be having the same resistance?

I also just picked up a new impeller yesterday cause I seen somebody on here say that would most definitely need changed....

Noticed a little oil coming from the pee hole I guess you'd call it! That prolly isn't good.

Anyways this was my dad's grandpas boat motor so I am really looking forward to getting it running good!

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Drew

Get yourself a spark checker and check for spark. Could be- bad coil, dirty points, bad condensor, bad ground, bad wire or not seated wire or a frayed wire going from cap to points or coil to points. The good part is that you have two of everything to test with. Clean the points with emery cloth and adjust to .020, align to top and adjust (not sure if that model has "set" written). Start swapping sides if you can't get it, swap condensor first and test. Then points. Usually a bad coil is a cracked coil but not always.

And yes, you should change the impeller. Unfortunately on that model you have to remove the powerhead to drop the lower unit. But it's not that hard.
