Hoping this question fits here since it does contain prop info....
Last year we bought a 2007 Four Winns Horizon 200 with a 270 VP 5.0 GXi. It had a 14.5x19 aluminum Volvo Penta prop on it. It turns about 5000 to 5100 with that prop at 43mph on GPS. Looking at various places it seems the boat was stock with a 14.25x21 and not expecting to gain any RPM I still figired I'd try the stock prop and see what I got.
I bought a 14.3x 21 solas prop (it's what the dealer had in stock) and ended up at 43mph at 45-4600rpm.

It occurred to me that maybe my 270 isn't capable of pulling the 5000rpm it should with the 21 pitch prop anymore? I keep reading about this boat being capable in stock form of better than 50mph. Is that an optimistic rating? Should I be looking at a better quality prop? I doubt I'd gain 5-8mph off just s switch to stainless right?
I'd pull the engine and refresh it over the winter if I thought I'd get 5000rpm with the 21 pitch prop again (I didn't own the boat new so I'm not sure that it ever did). Am I thinking correctly or should I be looking for fuel system issues eating up HP or just be happy with what I have?
Thanks in advance for any input.

If you think the engine is tired then have a compression check done on it to see. It could just be tuneup items are needed, bu tthe compression check will show if it is healthy or not.
