57 Envinrude 18HP Lower Unit Drain Holes - More than water?

I have a 57 Evinrude 18HP that runs great, but after test running it in a barrel/trash can I put it back on the stand. After the water drains out I notice black oil like residue coming out of drain holes. Weird thing is the lower unit oil shows no signs of water. Wondering if I need to replace the seals in the lower unit or not? Thanks

Oil in a test barrel is very normal for that motor.---Residue out of the drain holes is also normal.

yeessss. and on a Lyman? exhaust residue -- not a concern. The mix is 24:1, which is pretty rich by today's standards. But don't lean out the mix because of concerns about the residue. It's possible the motor is tuned to run a little richer than needed, but guessing a few good runs with the Lyman will take care of some concerns. It's a sweet motor.

Run it on the lake and see what happens.

Its when you don't see the black sludge/water coming out of the drain holes you have a problem! They are clogged. Just the byproduct of a 2 stroke.
