I have a 1957 evinrude 18hp model number 15922 and I'm have some issues getting it running right again. I replaced all the electrical and when I reinstalled the flywheel nut with a cheep torque wrench I broke the cam. I'm thinking I damaged other components because the cam keeps breaking now after I torque it right the motor will run for a few minutes then the cam breaks. So I took everything apart again and looking at the roller bearing seems something don't look right. is there a plastic seal? There's a 1 mil recess is this normal? What else could be causing the cam to break?

There is an upper crank seal there. I hope the flywheel taper has not been spread? What did you torque it to? Can you post a pic?

What Chris said...over torqueing the flywheel spreads the taper and that lets it go down on the shaft further, but the cam in in the way, so the cam breaks. The "rule" says you have to replace the flywheel. Shade-tree fix is grind some off one side of the cam, making it thinner. That is, if the flywheel isn't spread TOO much. And if the flywheel keyway is split at the bottom from extreme spreading, it is junk and needs to be replaced.

BTW, correct torque is 40-45 foot pounds

EDIT: Another thing that will spread the flywheel hub is oil or grease on the tapers. Flywheel and shaft must be clean and dry before installing and torqueing the flywheel.

I torque the flywheel to spec but with the cheap torque wrench I over torqued the flywheel the first time and now with a good wrench the cam breaks after a few minutes. I was suspecting that I possible damaged the flywheel. Is there a site I can buy a new flywheel?

Hi, off topic but .... in your 1st pic .... isn't the left leg of the top coil well in from the post it should be flush with?

So what I'm wondering is does the cam sit on the shaft like in the pic the shaft is tapered so I know that it doesn't go down anymore on the shaft but is there a bearing that sits flush with the cam or does the cam seat at the taper on the shaft? Thanks everyone
