I bought this on CL along with another motor. I liked it as it was complete. I have decided to make a winter project of it and not restore but refurbish if you will.

The good. It is complete. As purchased:

The bad. The PO or someone really did a number on the water jacket and it will need to be replaced.

the bad was when taking off the water jacket all the screws that you see with the washers on them broke off.

The good was some heat and a pair of vice grips got all of them out.

the good I went ahead and did a compression check and got 90 lbs in both holes.

the bad no spark. the good brand new coils already in it.

the expected was water in the lower unit along with molasses oil

definitely going to get seals. the carbon seal and the cork seal were in place when I pulled the powerhead and the power head looks clean inside.

I wish there were more of these up in my neck of the woods, I rarely if ever see them, even at meets.

I really like them and find they run well. The powerhead is a bit different from the J/E but the carb and ign and lower are the same. The nice thing about the Gale's are they have the boss for a fuel pump where the similar J/E do not.

Hey freddyray long time no see. I hope all is well with you. Awesome find. A 1954 CD in disquise, basically but with the Sea King powerhead. I kinda would like to find one of these myself. :D I just got my 1947 Sea King 5hp running yesterday, interesting enough.

This would be an awesome restoration project. A little TLC, I bet you'll have it running in no time. The refurbished ignition system is a definate plus and 90psi in the cylinders? Sweet! That motor is very low hours and still has lots of life in it.

Repainted, that would be really nice looking motor! I almost bought the equivalent Johnson in green today...but let it pass. Too many motors already.

Sweet looking motor!

Yea, those old Johnys are still really common. I have a '55 model CD-12 that needs a total repaint.

Nice work. Those coils came in so many different colors. I've seen just about all so far. LOL

What kind of motor did you get with the Sea King?

Cool. I like these models here. A full shift model with an integrated tank is an interesting concept.

One thing I find interesting about these Gales, is they used the '54-'55 CD/Fleetwin midsection clear up till about '59, when the Johny/Rudes had the newer style from '56 on.

Cool deal. I work in a sheet metal shop, and I probably would have grabbed a piece of 1/4" aluminum and did the same thing. LOL

1957 5 hp homemade decals and I really rushed the paint so I am not as happy with this one.

Awesome work Freddy! I've never seen a Sea King 5 hp. Very cool. Can't wait to see it on the water. Vroom-vroom!
