I finally found time to have a closer look at my latest project ... 1958 Sportwin 10HP 10016

I tried pulling the rope last weekend but the motor was locked (been sitting indoors for 12 years). I sprayed seafoam in the head and let it soak for a week. Today I put a wrench on the flywheel nut and the motor freed up right away. She cranks fine with the pull rope now so I did a compresison test. I got 72 on top and 82 on the bottom. What kind of compression should I have been hoping for?

The plugs were wrong and the gaps on them were also wrong, set at .025 That's easy enough to fix.

Lower unit seems to shift and turn fine.

I haven't pulled the flywheel but things look good and clean through the inspection plate. One set of points might be a little too open, but I did get spark, so I may try to run it with the existing electronics (except for the plugs) after making some adjustments. The only thing I'm wondering about is one of the coils was the normal green coil, and the other was red. Different manufacturers maybe?? or a wrong coil?

Other than the compression question, I'm pretty confident that I'll get her running. Of course, I'll do the normal lower unit checks, lube change, and install a new impeller. I'll also be rebuilding the carb and possibly be changing the fuel system to a single line system so I can run on the same tank as my old 58 super seahorse 35hp.

First purchase though, will be a manual. Since this was a $51 motor, I'm going to hate spending the money because I know I already have a Seloc here, but if the wife can't even find it, it's definitely lost forever.

I have one other silly question. Does anyone know of a site online that has pictures of this motor? Someone sprayed the cowling completely white and it looks pretty bad. I'd also be interested if anyone knows the correct color numbers for these old Evinrudes.
Thanks!
Tom

Re: 58 10hp sportwin

Thanks for the responses and the links. I do plan to do a decarb once I get this fired up, and I will check the head gasket for signs of a leak. Am I wrong to expect a little better compression once I fire the motor and get it warmed up?
Tom
