I think the electric starters might be the same but is the starter mount that same? As they are different cu in engines I tend to think they are not the same. Anyone know any better? thx :)

I don't know the total answer to your question, but here is what I do know. The 1958---are we talking about the standard 35 Electric or the Super Sea Horse/Lark? The Super/Lark will be interchange with 40, but the standard has the air silencer and needs the support part of the starter bracket. Also, in the case of Johnson, the standard 35 has the hood mount pin cast into the starter bracket.

There were at least 3 lengths of starter motors up through the years. The longer ones will replace the shorter ones, but the longer ones require a support bracket at the bottom end. Also, I'm not 100% sure the long one will clear the lower cowling on the '58 standard models.

F-R - Yes, it will clear the lower cowling- I've done a few conversions, retrofitting the later starter motor to earlier motors (using an earlier bracked for proper cowling fit.)

I seem to recall that the same starter on all those big motors will interchange with each other from 1955 on up to the late 60's, but of course, if you're puting a braket on the the older clamshell hooded motors, you want to make sure that hood mount pin is present. The single piece fiberglass hood will take just about any bracket.
