I have a 58 Evinrude Fastwin 18 and the prop hub started slipping. When I took it to the local prop repair shop they cracked it putting the new hub in.. It was not in the best shape any way but the guy said since he busted it he would replace it and that he had a brand new somebody ordered and failed to pick up. He would sale me the new one for the $45 it cost to re hub the old one so I agreed.. Upon physical inspection of the new one I noticed it was a 7 pitch as to where my factory prop was 11.. is this too much of a reduction in pitch? I wasnt reaching the Max RPM level with the 11 but I was thinking a 10 pitch would have been enough reduction.. The guy said he could re pitch it if I didnt like it but suggested I try it first.. I'm just looking for some expert opinions.. Thanks

Re: 58 Evinrude Fastwin 18 Prop pitch question..

The motor came with a 11" pitch.A 7" is way small. 11" is the biggest available as far as I know.
Your final prop would depend on your boat and typical load. In the day you would typically see the 18 on an open 14 opt 16'utility
And very likely with the 11" prop unless heavier loads were likely.Take a test run and get us as much info as possible.
It would be very good to have a tach but initially a gps speed could get us started.A severe repitch is a compromise at best.
A Tinytach, about $47, will work on any motor.
