Good afternoon everyone, well I started posting about the Fastwin I purchased back in 2018. I've been working on it ever since. Little back story, I purchased this motor from a guy that had it sitting in his garage for several years untouched. His father began having issues with it reving up with no power so they swapped out the motor and this one became a dust collector. (wound up being a spun hub on the prop). I paid $25 for it, the tank, and the cables for the electric start. The motor was seized up, lower gear case needed resealed, changed the impeller, replaced the shift rod coupler due to one hole being stripped out, new plugs, checked the ignition and it was in great shape. Compression was 100/115. I also rebuilt the carb.
We were able to get it freed up with some ATF and acitone after a few days of soaking with some help from here. It was suggested that I tear it down anyways due to rust and possible damage and that's where I stopped. This year I began with the gearcase reseal and once I finished that I decided to get it mounted up on the boat and run her. Overlooking the suggestions from many to tear it down is appearing to be a big mistake.
I've been fishing with the boat all season and I've never been able to get these power out of it that I feel I should have. I assumed I needed to work on the carb still. I tore that back down and cleaned it again but the result didn't change. I began researching the issue I was having (low power at WOT, Slow to speed up once I gave it more throttle) and found out that I should probably check the compression again. Yesterday I put the motor in my tank and got it up to operating temp them pulled the plugs and checked compression. 30/30
. I added a little 2 stroke oil into the Pistons and rechecked. Upper went to 60 but the lower remained unchanged.
I'm beginning to research my options. Rebuilding does not seem to difficult as I'm fairly mechanically inclined but I see that power heads are also available. From the looks of things I'll have more time and money invested with rebuilding but once it's done I should have no worries. A donor with good honoring now could be a start away from being back in the same situation I'm in now.
Any suggestions on looking into donors and what to look for/avoid? Also is there a kit for a rebuild available somewhere?
Thanks for your continued assistance with this motor. It's in pretty good shape cosmetically and I'm only missing tbe high speed knob from the adjustment needle. With the work I've put into this old gem I'd hate to throw in the towel at this point. Believe it or not it fires right up when it's cold on the 2-3rd pull
