Hey guys,

I'm going to go through my carb next week and clean it out. I ordered the rebuild kit off of this site. Now, I don't have the manual for this motor, and I know you guys preach the necessity of the manual pretty strongly, but I'm all but completely broke right now. (just had enough to cover that rebuild kit)

My question is: if I watch what I'm doing carefully, will I get through this rebuild ok without instructions? I have a fair amount of mechanical experience, but I've never done an outboard carburetor before. Any advice before I do this?

Thanks.

Re: 58 Johnson 35 Carb Rebuild

Check out your local library for a manual. If they lend them out, they're not likely to be in right now (since this is the hurry season), but some libraries keep them in the non-circulating section. It's worth a look anyway.
There's nothing particularly special about the carb rebuild. Just a couple of points:
1) The float must be set so it's even with the rim of the carb body casting when it's turned upside-down.
2) The main jet may be stuck. If it is, don't force (break) it. Just clean it as best you can in place.
3) Make notes as you dissassemble it. They're worth their weight in gold if you run into problems.
4) To remove the soft casting plugs, carefully drill them out with about a 1/8" drill bit and then pry them out. Try not to let the drill drop more than 1/8" when you come through the other side of the plug and mar the internal surfaces of the carb. To install the new plugs, coat them with sealer and insert them bump side up. Then tap the bump down with a hammer and punch so the plug spreads and seals. That's if you get new plugs with your kit of course. :)
5) As with all carb rebuilds, cleanliness is next to Godliness. :)

Good luck, and if you run into any problems post back here!

I'd like to add to Pauls good advice. If the carb still has the old cork float in it, try and replace it with the new poly floats. The old cork floats lose the varnish covering it and tend to soak up gas to the point that they wont' float. I don't know if the generic kits have the float in them but you can get one from any Johnny/Rude dealer.

the generic kit I bought did not have the float, it did have the filter though. If you have a digital camera, take pictures as you disassemble it. And expect more parts in the kit than go to your carb, just like automotive.

I did the carb on my '58 18hp last week with a Sierra kit, it doesn't come with a new float, but it does have full instructions and tune-up procedure.
I have the Seloc manual but could have easily done the job with just the instruction sheet, and maybe a few tips from here.

All right, thanks for all of the advice gentlemen.

I did the rebuild today and I think it went quite well - actually, it was pretty fun. That shined up carb looks pretty sweet all mounted up. Haven't had a chance to test it, but I'll get to that tomorrow.
