I've just purchased a 1958 Sea King,35 hp outboard. It is both pull and electric start. The throttle and shift seem to match the John-Rude Gale controls, but the electric start harness has a unique 9 pin (?) connector on the motor. Is it possible to find just the mate connector to add onto an older style John-Rude harness?

Wedge -- don't know what you have in mind (e.g., restoration or some testing), but it's possible to run that motor with a simple wire harness. (Had that motor, btw, and it's a good one.) You will want to test compression to see what you have to work with.

The connectors were changed in 1958-up models, adding two more wires to accommodate an ignition/key switch. Keeping that in mind, Johnson/Evinrude/Gale are the same. Of course, if you swap the engine side cable to match the previous boat side cable, you will give up the ignition switch feature. It's up to you.

This is a picture of the connector on the motor. No luck in finding a mate that can be used on a wiring harness. Looks like 7 pins.

That is a 1958-up for an ignition switch. A 1957 boat side cable won't plug into it. Luckily, 1958-up cables are much more plentiful.

If you just have to have a 1957 boat side cable, find a 1957 motor side cable (only used one year) to match it.

BTW, it has 6 small pins and two large pins. The screw connection counts as a ground "pin"..

Hard to believe that the 58 connector is more plentiful. Internet searches are not finding anything compatible. I've seen a few internal (males) that seem to be pulled out of old motors, but nothing for a harness.

Call peter at ---nymarine-----See if he knows of a path forward for you.-----In the 1950's men where men and electric start was an option.----Boats were smaller.----Budgets were smaller.-----Different expectations than today.-----Many 35 / 40 HP did not leave the factory with electric start.------Motors were taken off boats for repair / storage too.-------No tools required to remove that 35 HP from the boat. ETC , ETC

found this on nymarine. No good picture of the actual pin connector. They want $400 for it which is a little rich for me.

Then get rid of the quick disconnect feature.-------Take wires direct to a terminal board or the components they serve.----Just a matter of looking at a wiring diagram.-------Then ----" make it so "----Will hardly need to spend a penny.

https://maxrules.com/graphics/omc/wiring/1957-60_35-40.jpg Don't mean to tag along, but depends on what you have in mind (post 6). The generator was an add-on, and you might not have it (may not need the wiring that goes with it). For testing, I set these up with a button starter on a motor stand -- run at idle/fast idle in a plastic trash can, with water about half way up the leg.

Don't know what equipment you are rigging.

Ok, I just checked, the plug/cables combo in question was used 1958, 1959, 1960 on 35, 40, 50, 75hp models. If you want to go original, that is. Of course, option #2 is to hard-wire it as others have suggested.
