I have a 59 10 horse, engine runs perfect, idles good and runs great, but jumps out of both forward and reverse gear. It is a manual shift. When I it in forward, it will stay in gear while idling, but speeding up much at all, it jumps out of gear.

Is this the shift dog or a spring? I want to repair because the engine runs really well.

As it jumps out both in forward and reverse, I would have a look at linkage play first.
But most likely you will need to split the gearcase and check conditions of gears/clutch dog and shifter cradle.

I would do what Haffiman suggest and see if that works. If it doesn't, then you can likely find a replacement lower unit on Ebay or try any of these salvage yards.

Wow, thanks for all the info and all the links to parts places.

You think some of these places would have a good working lower unit or should I try to rebuild the one I have if the problem is not the linkage. I would just soon change out the lower unit.

I got real lucky! 59 Evinrude 10 horse jumps out of gear

I got real lucky! 59 Evinrude 10 horse jumps out of gear

This weekend I took the lower unit apart to see what shape it was in. Not having worked on one of these, I wasn't sure what to expect, but actually, it looked good. Just the very tips of the dogs shows any wear. The place where the dogs fit into the gears look good too.

So, I shifted it by hand after putting the lower unit back together and it seemed to work ok. Put it back on motor and as soon as I gave it a little gas, jumps out of gear, forward or reverse. It seemed to just barely kick in gear, reverse or forward with full movement of the shifter.

I took off the side plate where the shift rod connector is and noticed when I shifted the lever, the rod didn't seem to move much. I could make it move up or down by 1/4" to 1/2" more with a screw driver. Turns out the shift lever was loose where it connects to the shift rod. I tightened it up and now the shift rod moves up and down as far as it will go and I can't move it more with a screw driver.

Start up engine in drum of water and now it doesn't jump out of gear at all in reverse or forward. I took it up pretty fast, looked like a giant mixing bowl and it seems to work ok.

I am thinking about not doing anything to lower end now.
