59 evinrude 10 hp wont recoil.

Hey everyone, i have a 1959 evinrude golden jubilee 10 hp model number 10018. i was out on the river last weekend, went to start up my little kicker. after a couple pulls i got it running. i was letting it idle when it died. i go to pull start it again, pulled the cord it cranked then the cord would not retract. i took off the cowling then the pull start manually rewound it. reinstalled it, pulled it, still the same thing.

i dont know where to start, is there a spring that broke or something im missing. any help would be appreated.

I would guess the spring snapped. Pull the recoil off the powerhead. There should be one bolt in the center on the bottom that holds the recoil and spring tight against the housing. Be careful when you pull it off, as the spring can tend to fly off when tight. However, I would guess in your situation, it is broken and won't be compressed. Good luck.

ok i took off the pull starter and the spring was broken. (by the way it hurts when it de-tenions). i have a couple of questions. 1) where would i get one, marine store or online? 2) does it come coiled or do i have to try and re coil it ( that should be fun.... not).
any tips, suggestions. thanks
