'59 Evinrude 5.5 Fisherman

just got a '59 5.5 hp fisherman from my grandad and tryin to fix it up. i would like to know mainly where can i go to get parts(or where is the best place). looking for fuel filter, maybe a gas line plug that connects to original tank, and just general maintenance needs. and maybe someone can give advice on gettin steering and throttle "unfrozen" or working properly. any advice will be greatly appreciated!

also i have a '57 johnson 3 hp seahorse i will be fixing up soon if anybody is interested on advice for that as well!

As far as parts go.....Iboats has some, NAPA can order many of them (if you can find someone willing to look them up....some of the guys here will tell me they can't get them until I find the ones who have boats there), Ebay, Evinrude dealers, and some online parts sellers. The filter is hard to find but I found some on Ebay somewhat cheap, but NAPA can get them, just be prepared to pay over 10 bucks each for them. You need the little gaskets for the lower unit, sometimes Iboats has them, if not NAPA will order them. A TON of used stuff on Ebay. If you need a carb rebuild Iboats or Ebay can supply aftermarket parts kits. Try NAPA or a Evinrude dealer, if you are lucky enough to have one in your area (I don't). Advice, check your points, coils, carb, lower unit, buy a service manual, if motor has sat for a while get an impeller. I have not replaced mine yet, not suppsed to be difficult though. There is even a guy who posts some fo these repairs on You Tube...... When you check your carb if you see a float in there made of cork, REPLACE IT. If the coils are not new looking as well as points, replace them......new ones are usually green and old ones are burnt looking, dark and crappy looking.

I have a 61' 5.5 that I am dealing with. Nice motors, I am just having minor problems with a carb rebuild, but for the most part seems to be fairly easy to work with. Yes, Iboats will have some of the things you need such as coils, points, carb kits, manuals and the like. However like all suppliers they won't have it all especially when dealing with vintage stuff. But there are enough sources out there to find pretty much whatever you need.

thanks river critter, that was a lot of help. i thought mine looked good, yours looks WAY better! i'll try to get some pics on here soon. its not so bad on the inside but i could definitely use a paint job. i do have the original gas tank though which helps!
