Hello,

I'm looking to remove the gear at the bottom of the vertical speed/throttle control rod and the shaft from the tiller (or where it would be if it had a tiller) on the side of my motor so as to clean off the hard caked grease on the gears.

I see a pin in the shaft but can't seem to pull it out with pliers. Is there a screw or bolt near the end of the shaft to hold the gear on? What's the magic here?

Look at you with all this proactive maintainance! :)

Once you remove the slotted screw, you pull it out. It doesnt always come out all that easy either!

Yea, these areas are typically all gummed up with old grease and getting things apart is not that easy. That neat little throttle speed indicator on the motor with the lever on it will have to be pulled out, once you get the slothead screw out of the gear. You also will need to remove the lever that sits in the other gear in order to get it out. If you have the plastic buching under the gear, it's a good idea to pull that out and clean all the corrosion build up under it, because that build up swells the plastic around the stem and makes it hard to turn.

That's the idea! As much cleaning and such as can be done before introducing her to water again.

So there is a screw that holds the gear on the end of the tiller shaft which can be removed and this will allow me to clean the two gears where they meet at the bottom of the speed control rod. No need to take out the pin near the idle stop then?

There are wires attached near the gears, one that has a screw through it and a nut on the other side. Is this the screw that needs to be removed?

Yes it is. Those two wires on it should be attached to a mercury switch. That is actually a safety device to prevent your starter from engaging, if the throttle is set too high. You will also find a square nut on the back side as well. Be careful not to loose that.

Success. Got it off and next will clean off the caked on grease! Whoever owned this motor was certainly not shy about using the grease gun. Better than rust though!
