Hi everyone,
I'm trying to replace the coil's in my 59 sportwin. When I removed the old ones the little plug on the side of the coil broke off. I'm afraid to pull or pry too hard as I might break the male part of the plug. i would appreciate any advice.

This is my first time here and just want to say thanks to all you guy's that take time to share your knowledge. Best wishes to all.

Re: 59 sportwin coil

If you are referring to the plug or socket where the plug wires screwed into don't worry about it, it's part of the coil you are replacing.

Thanks for the reply bktheking,

Not sure I follow what you,re saying. When I removed the old coil the plug broke off the coil and stayed on the engine. My problem is how do I get that part off the engine without damaging the part of the plug on the engine.

Your help is greatly appreciated

The old coils get brittle and break lots of times. Just pick out the pieces of the old coil and brush out any pieces/residue remaining on the mounting plate. That plate is metal and you can't hurt it. If you're not replacing the wires, cut off the ends before re-inserting into the new coils.

Re: 59 sportwin coil

Thanks King and Lindy,

i got the remaiming parts of the old coils cleaned out and see the plug wires. The plug wires seem to be in good shape so I'll cut them off and install the new coils. If I cut 1/2 inch off the wires will the be adequate?

Thanks again for taking the time to help.

Yes, cut 1/2 off then they screw into the coil.

I may seem frivolous, but if you are to the point of replacing the coils, why not put new ignition wires on as well. Here I get them for about 50 cents a foot, for solid wire core, so for less then a dollar a wire it seems silly to use 50+ yr old stuff no matter how good it looks.
