Hey everyone!!!

My first post!

Have a Clinton Sea King 5hp outboard that was given to me. I kept it as a parts motor/drive for my 7hp Sea King but thought I'd have a peek at it and see what made it tick, maybe even get it running again. Never messed with these before as far as tearing them down or anything, so am a newbie...

Well, here she is...

Fixed a broken recoil spring, and have great spark, but found it to only have 60psi, which is at the service limit. Problem is I don't know that my gauge was working properly, or if I used my new one to test it.

First problem I've run across is a torn seal.

Piston/cylinder.

Rings, piston and cylinder look like new really, no scratches anywhere, all it needs is a sanding I think.

The ring gap is out of spec, but found a ring partially stuck which was probably my compression problem, so not sure if I should do anything about it.

And another problem (I think) is that there seems to be a good bit of play at TDC between the piston and the crank, but don't know if I can do anything about that either.

How does the points plate come off? The service manual says some sort of friction screw, but all I see is a ring wayyyy down inside the crankshaft.

My main problem is probably finding parts, so if anyone knows of a good source of parts for these Clinton outboards, me and my two Sea King oldies would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading!

Man there is a service number for Clinton.563-652-2411 They have never had the parts that I have needed though. I have a 7.5hp that needs an ignition. But compression in that guy is 110PSI. Hopefully I can get the spark back up to date on her.

Thanks for the info, I will try and contact them and see what they have.

I THINK I can get this thing running with a couple of seals. Hopefully I can find those somewhere, have contacted a place I've seen while lurking here to see if they have any.

What you are calling seals are actually gaskets.Seals are usually used to "seal" around a shaft.
You can make gaskets using punches, blade knives and a small ballpein hammer to tap out a gasket.
Head gasket material usually has a metalic like inner layer.
It will cut using the little hammer to cut the gasket against the edge of the casting.I sometimes use the rounded end of a box end wrench,or small crescent wrench,You can cut holes and everything with the right size hammer or tool.
Tap a couple of holes first and insert a couple of bolts to hold the gasket in place while you cut the rest.
I feel it is easier than transfering the old gasket size and holes to the new gasket material and using punches and such to cut it out..

Apologies, should have been more clear.

Yea, I will have to make the gaskets, well, except for the head gasket, its still in good shape.

I actually need the crank seals, as the PTO side is torn, and the points side looks marginal, but would like to replace it.

Here is a pic of the PTO seal, and its tear.

And there is a friction screw holding the points plate on, makes sense since the whole plate has to move with the throttle.

So have it all tore apart, hopefully can find these seals I need somewhere and get it running again. :)
