Hello! Dropped lower unit on 5hp gamefisher to check impeller. Pulled out driveshaft. WHen I put it back into the foot, the splines don't catch on anything. It just spins, plus....the prop shaft only will turn a little to left and right. Nothing changes when I push shift rod into neutral or drive. Did something come loose in the foot maybe???
Don't know what to do next.
Your experience is greatly appreciated!!!

I don't know how a pic will help. It would just be of a typical 5hp lower unit. A pic of this will not show any type of problem or what the problem is.

I'm no expert on game fishers, but it sounds as though there is a possibility that when you pulled the drive shaft out, the pinion gear dropped, and you are now out of alignment. May need to pull the lower apart to fix, but I would wait to see what the Guru's have to say about your predicament... ;)

If it didn't align when going back in then take the shaft out and look in and see if you can see the pinion gear and try to put it back in place???
A magnet on a stick might be of some help?Or an extendable magnet.

^^^ Yup...

I used to have a 5HP Gamefisher (newer charcoal colored Force style, not the old Techumsa air cooled version) and ran into the same problem... The driveshaft pulled out of the lower unit and the only way to get it back together was to remove the prop shaft cover and get everything back in it's proper place. I think Roger is correct, in that a gear slipped out of position, but don't really remember what it took to get it back together.

I haven't had the thing for 10 years, but seem to recall that there is a spring in there somewhere, that keeps everything from going back together by simply trying to reinsert the drive shaft. You have to remove the prop shaft cover to get everything assembled properly again.

The pinion DID fall; it's supposed to be retained by a snap ting on the end of the drive shaft. You'll see the groove in the splines if you look closely. The drive shaft also goes thru a needle bearing in the lower, and you don't want those needles falling out. You now need to get into the lower to reinstall the pinion, and find that stinkin' snap ring, you don't need that thang rattlin' around down there.

Yes, I did pull it apart and got the pinion gear back in it's saddle, but I never did see a snap ring. As I was trying to scrape out the old waterpump seal around the driveshaft...I wound up pulling the driveshaft out again. So when I open up the foot again, I'll reallyl look close for that damn snap ring.
I really appreciate the info!!!!!!!

I don't remember a snap ring the driveshaft of my 5HP Gamefisher, inside the lowerunit, so I wouldn't worry that you didn't find one.
